The Chris Hinze Combination |
Apart from his baroque-jazz and world music Chris Hinze demonstrated still more sides of his versatile musical personality: the funky jazz-rock 'Chris Hinze Combination' was presented internationally in 1971 in the Casino at Lake Geneva. There 'the magician of Montreux', as they called him, received the Press Award for best soloist of the Montreux Jazz Festival. From then on Hinze went on the road all over Europe. Mainly American musicians joined the Combination, like John Lee, Gary Brown Charlie Mariano, James Batton, Kevin Eubanks, and many others. But also European musicians like Jasper van ‘t Hof, Rob van den Broeck, Henny Vonk, Sigi Schwab, Joachim Kühn, Philip Catherine played in The Chris Hinze Combination until Hinze left for New York in 1976 where he lived until 1979.

'Combination' turned out to be an extremely apt name, because Hinze is always searching for new influences, interacting with musicians from other cultures, changing members of the C.H.C. for new tours and albums. After many years of musical development, one of Hinze’s most important releases was created: the album Saliah, the 'African-Indian and World Fusion' which he launched in 1984. Members of this Combination were Bo Stief (Denmark), Ramesh Shotham (India), Fodé Youla (Africa) and Chieli Minucci (USA). The albums Nazali and The Hunter were released between 1985 and 1988. Many European and American bands later followed his musical development, by then widely known as world music.
In early 1994, he and The Chris Hinze Combination were invited for a concert tour around India. The live recordings from this tour can be heard on the CD Namaskar, which was released in January 1995.

Since 2005 The Chris Hinze Combination is 'back to the roots' with a stunning new sound! A combination of jazz, dance, funk & world music, in which flute and vocals have a central role, supported by a swinging rhythm section. Chris Hinze shares the spotlight with the German vocalist Susana Dé, who won the National Jazz Soloist prize in 2003. Coen Molenaar (who has worked with Edsilia Rombley, Deborah Carter en Jan Akkerman, among others) is on keyboards, with Remco van de Sluis (The Lau, Sister Sledge en Jan Akkerman) on drums and the versatile Dutch cellist Djoeke Klijzing. Last but not least Chris Hinze on flute and keyboards.
